The S&M Show

The S&M Show

The S&M show is my first ever venture into a musical theatre. I have always loved music and use it a lot in my productions, but I have never directed a play in which music is a main character — a key player.

I felt that I was really lucky to be working with the truly talented team of people/performers: Hilary Palmer and Rowan Dixon, composer James Beal and choreographer Ali Golding. Rehearsals turned into an exiting exchange of ideas and times for creative experimentation. Often I would think about an idea, a dance move, an athmosphere and before I was able to verbalise it, people around me were already douing it, as if they somehow read my thoughts. Such understanding is extremely rare, but when it does happen, the entire project turns into an absolute bliss. So the bitter-sweet story of Sheila and Monty's lifelong romance came to life quickly and without a struggle.

In fact, I enjoyed working on The S&M show so much that I felt sad when rehearsals were over.

A one week preview at the Colour House Theatre in London was followed by a short run at the Edinburgh Fringe. We are now planning to have another run of this show in one of the London theatres in autumn 2010.

The cast: Hilary Palmer, Rowan Dixon

Written by Jason Fité
Directed by Dimitry Devdariani
Music by James Beal
Performed at the Colour House Theatre, London between 19th and 24th July 2010, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival between 5th and 15th August 2010
