| The Sorceress
The Sorceress is a dramatisation of the acclaimed and enchanting novel, Olesia, by Alexander Kuprin. It is the story of an outstanding young woman whose love and life are destroyed by the unforgiving, ignorant and superstitious mentality of the people around her.
Deeply routed in Slavonic mythology, Olesia raises questions surrounding a woman's fate, her relationship with authority and the right of an individual to be who they truly are. Sadly, as Kuprin tells us, those who dare to be themselves are not only victims of the state, but more so of their fellow human beings.
Although in the novel itself there are more then four characters, I deliberately chose to do the show with only four actors. That way they had to play more then one person which presented them with creative challenges that they overcame brilliantly. Visually their transformations were illustrated by simply putting on a different hat or a shawl, the rest was conveyed by the cast's exellent professionalism and talent.
To me, having a cast with imagination, dedication and bold ideas is the best possible reward that a director can get.
